Welcome to Middle School ReligionSixth Grade ReligionThe first 12 weeks of religion class will be spent going over morality with the seventh and eighth graders. After that Deacon John will continue with the sixth graders covering material from the Faith First textbook.
Seventh and Eighth Grade ReligionReligion classes are essential to our academic program at Sacred Heart School in addition to the faith that is interwoven throughout the day. 7th and 8th Grade Religion will cover an overview of many topics. The topics will be covered in a two year cycle. Year 1 includes the Catechism of the Catholic Church and Theology of the Body for Teens. Year 2 includes the Mass, Old Testament and New Testament. In 2015/2016, we will be in year 2 on the cycle. In addition to the year 2 topics, we will be including a special program for the first 12 weeks of class. Deacon John will be going of over morality using a unique book as well as introducing the Mass, which will be covered in greater detail at the end of the 12 weeks. The book used for Morality is Dragon Slayer: The Essential Training Guide for Young Dragon Fighters, by Joyce Denham from Paraclete Press. It presents vices as dragons to be slayed and gives ways to defend against these vices with the help of “senior dragon slayers” most of whom are Catholic Saints. Students will discuss the importance of the Mass from a personal and theological perspective. They will also go over the Parts of the Mass, Vestments, Traditions, and Priesthood. We will be using Behold the Mystery: A Deeper Understanding of the Catholic Mass by Mark Hart from The Word Among Us Press as our main text. Students will then begin a Bible Study using a couple of different resources along with the Bible. T3 Bible Timeline for Teens from Ascension Press and Bible Basics for Catholics from lighthouse media. |
